Special Needs Dentistry
Developmental disabilities such as autism, Asperger’s, Down syndrome, and other cognitive disabilities create challenges in accomplishing daily activities, particularly self-health care. Children with these disabilities need help to achieve and maintain good health, including oral health. Your pediatric dentist, Dr. Lisa is able to help establish an oral health plan to achieve a cavity-free smile. At Cherry Orchard Pediatric Dentistry, we work together as a TEAM with you and your child and our approach is as unique as your child.
Informal Meet- and- Greet: During this time, we may say hello, we may walk around the office, we may say nothing, and we may just smile. Your child and possibly the parent will direct the flow of the visit. Typically, we recommend scheduling these visits when it works best for you child and when the office is not very busy so your child is not over stimulated.
Schedule 2nd Visit:
This visit may be scheduled in 2 weeks or 1 month or however long the parent and Dr. feel the patient needs to comfortably return.
This visit will be either be a repeat of the prior visit or an introduction of a new step. Typically, if the child is ready for a new step, I prefer to show the parent how to do this at home so they can introduce it to their child. Parents already have established trust with their child, which makes it easier for them and in doing so easier for Dr. Lisa in the office. When the child returns to see us, they are more inclined to let Dr. Lisa perform the step because they are comfortable and familiar with it. This is where the TEAM approach works best.
Schedule Next Visit:
Each visit repeats what was accomplished at the prior visit and either moves forward with a step or stays at this step until comfort is achieved.
The commitment to these numerous visits may seem to be a lot initially however the outcome of your child embracing dental care at a level unimaginable is worth your time and my time.
